Episode 1
Mary has just learned of Matthew's engagement:
Mary has just learned of Matthew's engagement:
Mary: Hello Miss Swire. I'm Mary Crawley.
Lavinia: Of course you are. I mean I've been longing to meet you because I've heard so much about you from Matthew... that is.
Mary: Nice things I hope.
Matthew: What else would she hear from me?
Mary: I can't say. It's been such a long time. Who knows what you think of me now.
Matthew: I think... I'm very glad to see you looking so well.
Mary: All right you win. We are at peace again.
Matthew: He won't go with them will he? When they go to the front? [regarding Lord Grantham's Colonelcy appointment]
Mary: I hope not. He seems to think so. What's it been like?
Matthew: You know the thing is... I just can't talk about it.
Mary: Have you missed us?
Matthew: What do you think? You don't mind my bringing Lavinia?
Mary: On the contrary. I'm glad. Glad to see you happy.
Matthew: What about you? You happy?
Mary: I think I'm about to be happy. Does that count?
Matthew: It does if you mean it.
Mary: You'd be the first to know.
Mary: I hope not. He seems to think so. What's it been like?
Matthew: You know the thing is... I just can't talk about it.
Mary: Have you missed us?

Mary: I think I'm about to be happy. Does that count?
Matthew: It does if you mean it.
Mary: You'd be the first to know.
Matthew: I'm sure there's plenty of time to learn. Cousin Robert will be in charge here for many years. Lavinia will be a lawyer's wife far longer than be a countess. That's if I get through the war in one piece.
Mary: Of course you will. Don't you think like that. How long are you staying in the village?
Matthew: Just tomorrow. I take the six o'clock train on Thursday.
Mary: And then you'll be in France?
Matthew: Wherever I'm going, I'm so pleased that we're friends again.
Mary: Don't worry, I haven't come to undo your good work the other night.
Matthew: You must have been up before the servants
Mary: They were rather surprised to see me. I wanted to give you this (hands him a stuffed dog). It's my lucky charm. I've had it always... so you must promise to bring it back without a scratch.
Matthew: Don't you need it?
Mary: Not as much as you. So look after it please.
Matthew: I'll try not to be a hero if that's what you're afraid of.
Mary: Just come back safe and sound. Did you have a happy time yesterday?
Matthew: Showed Lavinia the places I like the most. Give her a few memories. Mary if I don't come back...
Mary: But..
Matthew: No, if I don't then do remember how very glad I am that we made up when we had the chance. I mean it. You send me off to war a happy man. Will you do something for me? Will you...will you look after mother? If anything happens.
Mary: Of course we will. But it won't.
Matthew: And Lavinia. She's young, she'll find someone else. I hope she does anyway. Until she does.
[The whistle blows.]
Mary: Goodbye then. (she gives him a kiss on the cheek) And such good luck!
Matthew: Goodbye Mary and God bless you.

At the trenches, Matthew takes Mary's lucky charm with him as he goes out to the Front.
Mary: Dear Lord, I don't pretend to have much credit with you. I'm not even sure that you're there. But if you are and if I've ever done anything good... I beg you to keep him safe.
Episode 2
Robert: Well now... still in one piece. Thank God.
Matthew: Touch wood.
Robert: I never stopped touching it.
Mary: Do you know Sir Richard Carlisle? My cousin Captain Crawley.
Sir Richard: How do you do?
Robert: And his fiancee Miss Swire.
Richard: I know Miss Swire. Her uncle and I are old friends.
Lavinia: Well old acquaintances anyway.

Lavinia: Well old acquaintances anyway.
Mary: Lavinia is a bit upset.
Matthew: She's awfully cut up that I have to go early. It's only the Coventry which doesn't sound too dangerous. If you're looking for mother she's at the hospital. I've just come from there.
Mary: Actually, it's you I came to see.
Matthew: Oh? How can I help?
Lavinia: Mary can you stay for luncheon?
Mary: I can't, but thank you.
Matthew: So what was your mission?
Mary: Just to say... we hope you're still coming for dinner tonight.
Matthew: Certainly we are. Why wouldn't we?
Mary: Sure? It'll be your last evening.
Matthew: Why? Don't you want me?
Mary: Of course I want you. Very much.
Matthew: I'm sorry you had a wasted journey.
Mary: Not at all. I needed an excuse for a walk. I'll see you at eight.

Matt: Edith seems jolly tonight.
Mary: She's found her metier. Farm laboring.
Matt: Don't be so tough on her.
Mary: That's like asking the fox to spare the chicken.
Matt: What about you? Last time you told me good news was eminent.
Mary: Would you be happy if it were?
Matt: Of course. I've found someone now and I want you to do the same.

Episode 3
Matt: I hadn't cast you as Florence Nightingale.
Mary: We can't leave all the moral high ground to Sybil. She might get lonely there. How are you? I know I mustn't ask you what you're doing.
Matt: You can ask what I'm doing in Downton. We've finished in the midlands and tomorrow we start on the Camps in the northern counties.
Mary: We'll we see something of you?
Matt: I think my general ought to come here. It's exactly the thing people like to read about.
Isobel: Sybil, come. Edith can do that.
Matt: Dear mother. She does love a bit of authority. I suppose she's driving Cora mad.
Mary: No names no pack drill.

Mary: No names no pack drill.
Matt: Poor mother. She longs to hold all the reins. I should go if only to keep our respective mothers apart.
Matt: The General is just about to leave. I'm afraid he doesn't have time to come in here.
Mary: I hope it's all been a success.
Matt: Cousin Violet said you have something to say to me about Lavinia. What is it?
Mary: I haven't the slightest idea.
Matt: What a relief. She was hinting you had uncovered some horrid stain.
Mary: The only evidence I've uncovered is that she's a charming person.
Matt: What a testimonial.
Mary: The truth is we're very much alike so naturally I think she's perfect. We all do. Don't we Aunt Rosamund?
Mary: I hope it's all been a success.

Episode 4
Mary has written a letter to Matthew informing him of her plans of engagement to Sir Richard Carlisle.
Mary has written a letter to Matthew informing him of her plans of engagement to Sir Richard Carlisle.
Edith: There's something you ought to know. Papa said not ot tell you, but I don't think he's right.
Mary: Go on.
Edith: Matthew's missing. He was on patrol and he just sort of... vanished. Papa hasn't told anyone. Not even Mama. I only know because I was there when he found out. It didn't seem right to keep you in the dark. I'm not trying to upset you truly.
Mary: For once in my life I believe you. [Mary walks away and quietly sobs]
Anna: They've told you then.
Mary: Do they all know downstairs?
Anna: William's missing too. I think everyone knows except her Ladyship.
Mary: I wished Edith had left it till the morning. I could have faced it all with one more night of sleep.
Mary: Go on.

Edith and Mary perform at a small concert held for the soldiers. Mary sings "If You were the Only Girl in the World" while Edith accompanies her on the piano. This concert takes place during the time when the fate of Matthew and William is still unknown. While singing, Mary suddenly stops when she spots Matthew walking in. Everyone turns around after seeing Mary's stunned expression.
Mary: Thank God.
Robert: My dear boy. My very dear boy.
Matthew: Come on, don't stop for me. [walks up the aisle towards Mary and picks ups singing] I would say such wonderful things to you. [Mary joins him] There would be such wonderful things to do.
Mary and Matthew: If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy.

Mary and Matthew: If you were the only girl in the world and I were the only boy.
Matthew: Somehow we got lost and we got trapped behind some Germans for three days. When we got out of that we stumbled across a field dressing station. We were immediately admitted, but we weren't in any danger so they didn't inform our unit.
Robert: Well they should have jolly well told us when you got back to base.
Matthew: I hope you weren't really worried.
Robert: Oh you know us. We like to be sure of our hero at the front.
Mrs. Hughes: I beg your pardon my lord but the Dowager Countess is leaving.
Robert: Ah. [walks away]
Mary: What will you do with the rest of your leave?
Matthew: Well since mother isn't here. I think I'll run up to London and see Lavnia. I got your letter about Carlisle.
Mary: I hope you'll approve. I know you don't like him much now..
Matthew: I hardly know him, but I'm sure I'll like him when I do. That's if he's good to you. If he's not, he'll have me to answer to.

Episode 5
The Crawleys are awoken by terrible news that Matthew has been seriously wounded at the front. As everyone returns to bed, Mary stays behind for a word with her father.
Mary: Whatever you discover, tell me. Don't keep anything back.
Robert nods and gives her a kiss on the cheek.

Matthew is brought back to the Downton hospital for recovery. Mary volunteers to look after him.
Sybil: Cousin Matthew can you hear me?
Officer: He's breathing, but he's not been conscious since we got him. They filled him full of morphine.
Sybil: Thank you.
Mary looks at a tag attached to Matthew.
Sybil: What's it say?
Mary: Probable spinal damage.
Sybil: It could mean anything. We'll know more in the morning. [She picks up Matthew's belongings and a stuffed dog falls out] What's this doing here?
Mary: I gave it to him for luck. He was probably carrying it when he fell.
Sybil: If only it had worked.
Mary: He's alive isn't he?
Sybil: I should wash him. Could be grim. Sometimes we have to cut through the clothes they've traveled in and there's bound to be a lot of blood.
Mary: How hot should the water be?
Sybil: Warm more than hot and bring some towels.

Matthew dreams of Mary calling to him in his sleep. He gradually awakens and sees Mary sitting besides him.
Mary: Are you feeling a bit less groggy?
Matthew: Where's Lavinia?
Mary: She's gone back to unpack.
Matt: How's William? I know he tried to save me.
Mary: He isn't too good I'm afraid.
Matt: Any sign of Mother?
Mary: Not yet, but I'm sure she's making her way back by now.
Matt: Still got this funny thing with my legs. I can't seem to move them or feel them now that I think about it. Did Clarkson mention what that might be?
Mary: Why don't we wait for Lavinia and then we can all talk about it.
Matt: Tell me.
Mary: You've not even been here for 24 hours. Nothing would have settled down yet.
Matt: Tell me.
Mary: He says you may have damaged your spine.
Matt: How long will it take to repair?
Mary: You can't expect them to put timing on that sort of thing.
Matt: But he did say it would get better?
Mary: He says the first task is to rebuild your health and that's what we have to concentrate on.
Matt: I see.
Mary: and he says there's no reason why you should not live a perfectly normal and full life.
Matt: Just not a very mobile one.
Mary: Would you like some tea? I would.
Matt: Thank you for telling me. I know I'm blubbing, but I mean it. I would much rather know. Thank you.
Mary: Blub all you like and then when Lavinia's here you can make plans. [Once out of Matthew's sight, Mary cannot hold back her tears any longer].

Mary learns from Lavinia that Matthew broke off their engagement because he cannot be a "proper lover" due to his injury.
Matt: She's better off in London.
Mary: If you say so.
Matt: Do you know why I sent her away?
Mary: I think so.
Matt: Then you know I couldn't marry her. Not now. I couldn't marry any woman.
Mary: And if they should just want to be with you? On any terms?
Matt: No one sane would want to be with me the way I am now. Including me. Oh God, I think I'm going to be sick.
Mary: It's alright [brings over his sick bowl] It's perfectly alright.
Matt: [chuckles to himself]
Mary: What is it?
Matt: I was just thinking. It seems such a short time ago since I turned you down. Now look at me. Impotent crippled, stinking of sick. what a reversal. You have to admit, it's quite funny.
Mary: All I'd admit is that you're here and you've survived the war. That's enough for now.
Mary: If you say so.
Matt: Do you know why I sent her away?
Mary: I think so.

Episode 6
Mary: I should have arms like Jack Johnson if I'm not careful.
Matt: I'm strong enough to wheel myself.
Mary: I'll be the judge of that.
Matt: I keep thinking about William. How he should be here. Not exactly instead of me, but sacrifice should be rewarded. He was the brave one.
Mary: You were both brave and I don't think we can say should about things that happen in war. It just happens and we should live with it.
Mary: I should have arms like Jack Johnson if I'm not careful.

Mary: It's big. The staircase is prettier than the one here, but mainly it's just big.
Matt: Can we stop? I'd much rather see your face when we talk. So will he buy it?
Mary: Probably. He says he wants to steal Carson so he can come run it for us.
Matt: I don't envy you telling your papa.
Mary: Suppose Carson won't do it.
Matt: Since he would open his veins for you I don't think there's much doubt.
Mary: I don't have to marry him you know?
Matt: Yes you do. I thought for a moment if I was an argument against your marriage I should jump into the nearest river.
Mary: And how would you manage that without my help?
Matt: Well I'll get you to push me in. Seriously, I can only relax because I know you'll have a real life coming. If I ever thought I was putting them in jeopardy, I'll go away and never see you again.
Mary: You don't mean that.
Matt: But I do. I'm the cat that walks by himself and all places are alike to me. I have nothing to give and nothing to share and if you were not engaged to be married, I wouldn't let you anywhere near me.
Matt: Can we stop? I'd much rather see your face when we talk. So will he buy it?

Mary is outraged when she hears that a Peter Gordon claims to be Patrick Crawley, the cousin that presumably died on the Titanic. She believes that he's an imposter. She's frustrated and hurt knowing how this would affect Matthew's inheritance claim when he's already suffering through so much. Matthew feels defeated and helpless.
Episode 7
The family talks about fashion.
Mary: Have you seen the boys' haircut the women are wearing in Paris?
Matthew: I hope you won't try that.
Mary: I might.
Lavinia: I'm not sure how feminine it is.
Mary: I'm not sure how feminine I am.

Matthew discovers he can stand again and the family is thrilled for him. Mary especially.
As Matthew is on his way to recovery, he and Lavinia announce that they will get married after all. Most people around the dinner table seem to be happy with the news.
Violet comes into Matthew's room to have a chat with him.
Violet: No doubt you would regard this rather unorthodox, my pushing into a man's bedroom uninvited.
Matt: Well um..
Violet: It's just I don't want us to be disturbed. I'm sure you know how pleased I am that you will recover after all.
Matt: Thank you.
Violet: Just as I'm delighted that you can look forward to a happy marriage life.
Matt: I'm very lucky.
Violet: Now this may come as a surprise, but I feel I must say it all the same.
Matt: Please do.
Violet: Mary is still in love with you.
Matt: What?
Violet: I was watching her the other night when you spoke of your wedding. She looked like Juliet on awakening in the tomb.
Matt: Mary and I have always...
Violet: Of course I suspected long ago that the flame hadn't quite gone out, but then there was no chance with your recovery and it seemed best she find happiness where she could.
Matt: I quite agree and Sir Richard is...
Violet: No, let's not muddy the pool by discussing Sir Richard. The point is you loved her once. You sure you can't love her again?
Matt: Cousin Violet I... please don't think I mind your speaking to me in this way. I quite admire it. But... consider this... Lavinia came back against my orders determined to look after me for the rest of my life which meant that she would wash me and feed me, and do things that only the most dedicated nurse would undertake and all with no hope of children or any improvement.
Violet: Yes, it's all very admirable and I give her full credit.
Matt: Giving her that credit, do you think it would be right for me to throw her over because I can walk? To dismiss her because I no longer have need of her services?
Violet: Spoken like a man of honor and we will not fall out over this.
Matt: But you don't agree.
Violet: I would just say one thing. Marriage is a long business. There's no getting out of it for our kind of people. You may live 40... 50 years with one of these two women. Just make sure you have selected the right one.
Violet: No doubt you would regard this rather unorthodox, my pushing into a man's bedroom uninvited.

Sir Richard Carlisle asks Mary if she's still in love with Matthew.
Mary: Of course not. Would I ever admit to loving a man who preferred someone else over me?
Mary: Of course not. Would I ever admit to loving a man who preferred someone else over me?
Isobel: Is this yours? [holds up a stuffed dog] Moseley found it in your dressing room. It's not one of your old toys is it because I don't recognize it.
Matt: No, it was given to me as a charm to take to the front.
Isobel: Well, you're home and safe now. Should I put it in the barrel for the village children?
Matt: [snatches the dog from her] No! You never know. Might be bad luck not to keep it. [Puts the dog into his pocket]
Episode 8
Mary: How are you feeling?
Matt: Just wish I could get rid of this damn stick. Sorry.
Mary: Don't be. If anyone has the right to swear, it's you.
Lavinia: Don't bully yourself. Think of where we were a few months ago and smile.
Mary: I quite agree.
Matt: I want to make it up and own that aisle without assistance.
Lavinia: Up yes. You'll have me to lean on when you're coming down.
Mary: You still have 3 full days of practice so never say die.
Mary: How are you feeling?
Matt: Just wish I could get rid of this damn stick. Sorry.
Mary: Don't be. If anyone has the right to swear, it's you.
Lavinia: Don't bully yourself. Think of where we were a few months ago and smile.

Lavinia: Up yes. You'll have me to lean on when you're coming down.
Mary: You still have 3 full days of practice so never say die.
Mary: Where is everyone?
Matt: I'm not sure. Cousin Violet's gone home.
Mary: What about you?
Matt: Waiting for Lavinia and mother.
Mary: Dr. Clarkson wants Lavinia to stay here. He'll see her tomorrow. [Pauses and listens to the music] I don't know this one.
Matt: Actually I rather like it. I think it was in a show that flopped. Zip Goes a Million or something. [Matthew offers his hand for a dance and Mary accepts].
Mary: Can you manage without your stick?
Matt: You are my stick.
Mary: We were a show that flopped.
Matt: Oh God Mary. I'm so so sorry. Do you know how sorry I am?
Mary: Don't be. It wasn't anyone's fault. If it was, it was mine.
Matt: You know Cousin Violet came to me, told me to marry you.
Mary: When was this?
Matt: A while ago. When they knew I could walk again.
Mary: Classic granny. What did you say?
Matt: That I couldn't accept. Lavinia's sacrifice of her life and children and future and then give her the brush off when I was well again well I couldn't could I?
Mary: Of course not.
Matt: However much I might want to.
Mary: Absolutely not. [they kiss]
Lavinia: Hello? [M/M break apart immediately]
Matt: What are you doing up?
Lavinia: Shouldn't we be getting back?
Mary: It's decided. You're staying here. Dr. Clarkson is coming tomorrow morning so he can treat all of you together. You can borrow some things until Matthew brings you what you need. I'll go and organize a room.
Matt: I'm not sure. Cousin Violet's gone home.
Mary: What about you?
Matt: Waiting for Lavinia and mother.

Lavinia tells Matthew that she saw and heard the exchange between him and Mary the other night and feels that Mary and him make a finer couple. She's wondering if their engagement is a mistake. She loves him, but wants him to think about it carefully.
Lavinia dies of the Spanish flu and they attend her funeral.
Mary: You must tell me if there's anything I can do. Anything at all.
Matt: Thank you. I don't think so. That night when we were dancing, Lavinia came downstairs she heard, she saw everything.
Mary: How terrible for her. I'm so sorry.
Matt: Because of what she saw, she thought we should cancel the wedding. That I belonged with you not with her. She gave up because of us. She said to me when she was dying, isn't this better. I know it's a cliche, but I believe she died of a broken heart because of that kiss. We were the ones who killed her.
Mary: Oh Matthew...
Matthew: We could never be happy now don't you see? We're cursed you and I and there's nothing to be done about it. Let's be strong Mary. Let's accept that this is the end.
Mary: Of course it's the end. How could it not be?
Mary: You must tell me if there's anything I can do. Anything at all.
Matt: Thank you. I don't think so. That night when we were dancing, Lavinia came downstairs she heard, she saw everything.

Christmas Special
Mary: Isobel told me you were telephoning for news of Mr. Swire. How is he?
Matt: Not good I'm catching the train first thing in the morning. I hope I'm in time.
Mary: Is it as bad as that? I'm so sorry. [to Richard] Matthew is going to London tomorrow. Lavinia's father is ill.
Richard: Better warn Robert if you'll miss the shoot.
Matt: I'll be back by New Year's Day. He won't last that long I'm afraid. Forgive me if I'm casting a gloom.
Mary: Don't be silly. We're all under the shadow of Bates' trial.
Matt: Will any of you have to testify?
Mary: Only Papa and some of the servants. But I'm going to support Anna.
Matt: Would you like me to come with you to explain what's happening. Or will you do that [to Richard]
Mary: Richard wants to go back to work the day after the shoot. Don't you?
Richard: Yes I do.
Mary: Isobel told me you were telephoning for news of Mr. Swire. How is he?
Matt: Not good I'm catching the train first thing in the morning. I hope I'm in time.

Richard: Yes I do.
The family is playing "The Game" on Christmas night. Mary is trying to act out a book title while Matthew looks on and can't help, but chuckle at her antics.
New Year's Eve
Mary: I hope London wasn't too grim.
Matt: Well I got down there in time which is the main thing and I was with him when he died. So he wasn't alone.
Mary: I'm so sorry and so glad.
Mary: I hope London wasn't too grim.
Matt: Well I got down there in time which is the main thing and I was with him when he died. So he wasn't alone.
Mary: I'm so sorry and so glad.
New Year's Day Shooting
Richard: Lady Mary will stand by me.
Mary: Now just...
Matt: I thought you said you will stand by me for the first drive.
Mary: Did I? Yes, I think I did.
Richard: Lady Mary will stand by me.
Mary: Now just...
Matt: I thought you said you will stand by me for the first drive.
Mary: Did I? Yes, I think I did.
Mary: Why don't you have a loader? Arnold would have found you one.
Matt: I'm not very good at it. This or double guns and I don't want a witness.
Mary: I'm a witness.
Matt: Then please don't spread the word of my incompetence.
Mary: I never know which is worse, the sorrow when you hit the bird or the shame when you miss it. Thank you for intervening back there before I said something rude.
Matt: He does rather beg to be teased.
Mary: The awful truth is, he's starting to get on my nerves. Still you're not the person to burden with that.
Matt: You're still going to marry him though.
Mary: Of course, why wouldn't I?
Matt: Think I might have caught that one. You must promise faithfully to lie when they ask you how I did.

Matt: Think I might have caught that one. You must promise faithfully to lie when they ask you how I did.
Matthew hears some shouting between Mary and Carlisle.
Matt: Is something the matter?
Mary: Richard's loader seems to have got lost and this is one of the best drives. He's missing all the fun.
Matt: I see.
Richard: [His loader shows up] where the blood hell have you been?
Mary: I'm afraid Sir Richard is rather anxious to begin.
Matt: I better get back to my post.
Mary: Anna's very grateful you're coming with us.
Matt: I'll have to go to London, but I'll be back.
Mary: What are you going for?
Matt: Reggie Swire's funeral. He wanted his ashes to be buried in Lavinia's grave. I'll bring them back.
Mary: What does Mr. Travis say?
Matt: I haven't asked him. I thought I'd do it myself one day.
Mary: Well let me know when. I'd like to be there if you don't mind.
Matt: No I don't mind.
Matt: I'll have to go to London, but I'll be back.
Mary: What are you going for?
Matt: Reggie Swire's funeral. He wanted his ashes to be buried in Lavinia's grave. I'll bring them back.

Matt: I haven't asked him. I thought I'd do it myself one day.
Mary: Well let me know when. I'd like to be there if you don't mind.
Matt: No I don't mind.
Matt: Mary! Can i help?
Mary: After today, I won't insult you by asking what you mean.
Matt: You don't have to marry him you know? You don't have to marry anyone. You'd always have a home here as long as I'm alive.
Mary: Didn't the war teach you never to make promises? And anyway you're wrong. I do have to marry him.
Matt: But why? Not to prove you've broken with me. Surely, we know where we stand. We have no need for gestures.
Mary: If I told you the reason, you would despise me and that I really couldn't bare.
Mary: After today, I won't insult you by asking what you mean.
Matt: You don't have to marry him you know? You don't have to marry anyone. You'd always have a home here as long as I'm alive.

Mary: If I told you the reason, you would despise me and that I really couldn't bare.
Matthew accompanies Mary to Bates' trial.
At the cemetery
Matt: You got my note? I'm so glad you're here. I feel somehow we're... all of us are part of each other's story for awhile and...
Mary: And now that story is at an end.
Isobel: In what way?
Mary: Well Matthew doesn't want to live here and I'm moving away soon.
Matt: You're moving to Haxby?
Mary: Wherever I go, the time we shared is over and Lavinia was a part of that.
Isobel: She's still in love with you you know?
Matt: I don't think so.
Isobel: Well I'm sorry it's as plain as the nose on your face.
Matt: I thought you didn't like her for throwing me over.
Isobel: That's a different conversation.
Matt: Mother it has to be like this. I'm afraid I can't explain why. At least, I'm not going to.
Isobel: Something ot do with with Lavinia?
Matt: Maybe.
Isobel: Well you see. I think you're wrong. Lavinia wouldn't have wanted this. She was a sweet girl a kind girl. She wouldn't have wanted you to be unhappy.
Matt: You don't understand. I deserve to be unhappy. So does Mary.
Isobel: Nobody your age deserves that and if you are and you can do something about it and don't, well the war has taught you nothing.
Matt: That's your opinion.
Isobel: Yes, it is.
Matt: You got my note? I'm so glad you're here. I feel somehow we're... all of us are part of each other's story for awhile and...
Mary: And now that story is at an end.
Isobel: In what way?

Matt: That's your opinion.
Isobel: Yes, it is.
Mary: Why were you up at the house this evening? Did Papa summon you?
Matt: As a matter of fact, I came to see you. Wanted to find out what you meant when you said you had to marry Carlisle and that I would despise you if I knew the reason.
Mary: Yes, you would.
Matt: Whatever it is, it cannot be enough for you to marry him.
Mary: That's what Papa said.
Matt: So you've told him.
Mary: Yes.
Matt: Does he despise you?
Mary: He's very disappointed in me.
Matt: Even so... please tell me.
Mary has just told Matthew about her Pamuk scandal. He is stunned.
Mary: Please say something... if it's only goodbye.
Matt: Did you love him?
Mary: You mustn't try to...
Matt: Because if it was love then..
Mary: How could it be love? I didn't even know him...
Matt: Then why did you?
Mary: It was lust Matthew... or a need for excitement or something in him that I... oh God what difference does it make? I'm Tess of the d'Urberville to your Angel Clare. I have fallen. I am impure.
Matt: Don't joke. Don't make a it little not when I'm trying to understand.
Mary: Thank you for that. But the fact remains that I am made different by it. Things have changed between us.
Matt: Even so, you must not marry him.
Mary: So I must brave the storm
Matt: You're strong. A storm braver if ever I saw one.
Mary: I wonder. Sybil's the strong one. She really doesn't care what people think, but I'm afraid I do. Papa suggested I go to New York to stay with Grandmama to ride it out.
Matt: You can find some unsuspecting millionaire.
Mary: Preferably one who doesn't read English papers.
Matt: Go or stay, you must sack Carlisle. It isn't worth buying off a month of scandal with a life time of misery. When is he due back?
Mary: Tomorrow. He and Aunt Rosamund's beau are returning for the servant's ball.
Matt: Will that still go ahead?
Mary: Not if Bates is... not if the worse happens. Papa hasn't faced it. It probably will.
Matt: You were wrong about one thing.
Mary: Only one? What is that pray?
Matt: I never would... I never could despise you.
Mary: Please say something... if it's only goodbye.
Matt: Did you love him?
Mary: You mustn't try to...

Mary breaks off her engagement with Carlisle. He's furious and threatens to publish her scandal. Matthew walks in because he hears some shouting.
Matthew: Mary? Are you quite alright?
Carlisle: Oh here he is.... a man who can smile and smile and be a villain. Is she not to be trusted even to get rid of me without your help?
Matt: I heard shouting.
Carlisle: Lavinia knew it you know. She knew you never loved her.
Matt: Don' t you dare.
Carlisle: Oh she said it once. It was late and she was tired. You two were locked together in the corner of the room and she said if he could just admit the truth than all four of us might have a chance.
Matt: You liar.
Carlisle: I'm not a liar. I'm many things, but not that. She regretted it of course, but she said it.
Matt: You bastard! [punches Carlisle]
They get into a brawl.
Robert: Stop this at once! I presume you will be leaving in the morning Sir Richard. What time should I order your car?
Carlisle: Smooth you are. What a model of manner and elegance. I wonder if you'll be quite so serene when the papers are full of your daughter's exploits.
Robert: I shall do my best.
Violet: What on earth's the matter?
Carlisle: I'm leaving in the morning Lady Grantham. I doubt we will meet again.
Violet: Do you promise?
Matt: Sorry about the vase.
Violet: Oh don't be don't be. It was a wedding present from a frightful aunt. I have hated it for half a century.
Matthew: Mary? Are you quite alright?
Carlisle: Oh here he is.... a man who can smile and smile and be a villain. Is she not to be trusted even to get rid of me without your help?

Matthew: What about it? [Matthew offers to dance with her]
Mary: Why not?
Matthew: How are you plans for America going?
Mary: I'll book my crossing as soon as I hear back from Grandmama.
Matthew: Will you be gone long?
Mary: I don't know. I'll have to see.
Mary: Why not?
Matthew: How are you plans for America going?
Mary: I'll book my crossing as soon as I hear back from Grandmama.
Matthew: Will you be gone long?
Mary: I don't know. I'll have to see.
Matt: That was fun. There will be a few thick heads in the morning.
Mary: No doubt they think it's worth it.
Matt: So you're really going to America.
Mary: Hmm.. [Mary nods]
Matt: Would Carlisle make your life a nightmare if you stayed?
Mary: I couldn't tell you. Maybe. Even if he does let me go, my story is still out there and always will be.
Matt: Would you stay... if I asked you to?
Mary: Oh Matthew you don't mean that. You know yourself we carry more luggage than the porters at King's Cross. And what about the late Mr. Pamuk? Won't he resurrect himself every time we argued?
Matt: No.
Mary: You mean you've forgiven me?
Matt: No. I haven't forgiven you.
Mary: Well then.
Matt: I haven't forgiven you because I don't believe you need my forgiveness. You lived your life and I've lived mine and now it's time we live them together.
Mary: We've been on the edge of this so many times Matthew. Please don't take me there again unless you're sure.
Matt: I am sure.
Mary: And your vows to the memory of Lavinia?
Matt: I was wrong. I don't think she wants us to be sad. She was someone who never caused a moment's sorrow in her whole life.
Mary: I agree.
Matt: Then will you?
Mary: You must say it properly. I won't answer unless you... kneel down and everything.
Matt: [smiles and gets down on one knee. He takes her hand] Lady Mary Crawley, will you do the honour of becoming my wife?
Mary: Yes!
They smile, kiss, embrace and twirl happily in the snow in front of Downton.
Mary: No doubt they think it's worth it.
Matt: So you're really going to America.
Mary: Hmm.. [Mary nods]
